Nero did not actually murder his mother Agrippina the Younger. He tried to, but failed. He tried to kill her though a planned shipwreck, but she survived. He then had her executed. He did so because she was plotting against him. She wanted to be the real ruler of Rome and thought that Nero was going to her puppet. Instead, Nero started asserting his authority. Therefore, she started conspiring against him. Agrippina had also been suspected of murdering her husband, Claudius, the previous emperor. She succeeded in having her son Nero (whom she had from a previous marriage) become emperor instead of Britannicus, Claudius' son from a previous marriage.

It was said that Nero wanted to get rid of his mother because she refused to allow him to divorce his wife and marry a woman he had fallen in love with, Poppea Sabina. Many modern historians do not think this is true and that it was because of the plotting.

Nero married Poppea and it was alleged that he kicked to death when she was pregnant. Again, many modern historians think this is untrue. There were many allegations and keenness to smear Nero by Roman writers. This is because Nero was hated by the aristocracy (but loved by the poor) and Roman writers were aristocrats. Nero was deeply distraught when Poppea died. He had her embalmed instead of being cremated and put her body in the Mausoleum of Augustus, which was a great honour. He organised an extremely lavish funeral for her, and gave her divine honours. It is more likely that Poppea died of miscarriage or childbirth.

Britannicus, Nero's step brother died in suspicious circumstances. Nero was suspected of having murdered him. This story is more plausible. He would have done so because his mother, when she realised Nero would not be her puppet was planning to have Britannicus replace him as the emperor.
