David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer during the late 1800's. He explored extensively in southern and central Africa, which included the first sighting of Victoria Falls by a Westerner. He was periodically "lost" in central Africa, having all contact with the Western world cut off for six years, until an American named Henry M. Stanley found him. He was a very popular figure both in Britain and America during his missionary career. He perished from fever in central Africa in 1873. He is well known for being quite anti-slavery, often acknowledging the dignity of the Africans he proselytized.
