Sir Leonard Woolley was the Archaelogist who led the excavation around 70 years after its initial rediscovery in 1953 by British Vice Consul John George Taylor circa 1954. And over 300 years before this, In 1625, Pietro Della Valle made numerous recording of his findings at the site.
J.G. Taylor was not technically an archaeologist, but he did lead the first excavation, so I suppose this is a double sided question that requires a double sided answer.
