The first U.S. Capitol was built in 1793 out of sandstone. It was designed by Dr. William Thornton after a contest failed to award the winning designer $500 failed because the planners could not agree on a design. The actual building was difficult because the sandstone needed to be ferried in from Virginia, workers did not want to go live in the area, and funding was difficult.
