Hasdrubal Barca (Hannibal's brother) was the overall commander of the Carthaginian forces in Iberia. Hannoengaged in the first battle against the Romans (Battle of Cissa, 218 BC). Hasdrubal Barca led the army in the Battle of the Ebro River (217 BC) and the Battle of Dertosa (215 BC). Hasdrubal Barca and Mago Barca led the Battle of the Upper Baetis (211 BC), which defeated the 1st Roman expedition to Iberia. These two men and Hasbrubal Gisco led the Battle of Cartagena (209 BC). Hasdrubal Barca was attacked at the battle of Beacula (208 BC) and was killed in battle in Italy in 207 BC. Hasbubal Gisco and Mago Barca suffered the final defeat of the Carthaginians at the battle of Ilipa in 206 BC.
The commanders of the 1st Roman expedition to Iberia (218-211 BC) were Gaius Cornelius Scipio and Publius Cornelius Scipio. The commander of the 2nd Roman expedition to Iberia (210-206 BC) was Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus.

Hannibal commanded the expeditionary force in Italy, and was recalled to defend the homeland when Roman general Scipio invaded North Africa. There were other commanders in Spain, North Africa and Sicily.
First Punic War: Carthage was pushing its control in Sicily and ran up against some rebellious mercenary soldiers. Rome chose to support them as a means of having an excuse to move into Sicily to expand its territory beyond Italy. Second Punic War: Carthage attacked Sargentum in Spain, in breach of the Ebro River line agreed with Rome as dividing their areas of interest in Spain.
