During the American Civil War, quite a few different generals commanded different Confederate armies in the field and in garrisons around the South. Perhaps the most famous, and certainly one of the most successful, was General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia between 1862 and 1865.

The Confederates did not appoint a General-in-Chief until January 1865, and it was the only possible choice, Robert E. Lee.

It was too late to make any difference.

Until then, the job had effectively been performed by the President, Jefferson Davis. He was badly out of his depth.
