Hiram Revels, an African American minister from who had lived, worked and pastored a church in Baltimore before returning to Mississippi. He was also once president of Alcorn College. Rumor has it he refused to to allow the Governor Alcorn to name the school after him, so the governor named it after himself.

Why did Romulus set a senate up instead of a monarchy?

Romulus did set up a monarchy. He was the first king of Rome. He set up the senate as his royal advisory body. It was a council of elders. Senatus (senate) was derived from senex, old man. He appointed 100 patres falmilias (heads of the household) from the leading clans of Rome to seat in the senate.

In ancient Rome who is the senator?

The senators of ancient Rome were members of the republic's consulting body. They were generally upper classed, but not always. Sometimes a lower classed man could be enrolled in the senate by an accumulation of wealth. There were times when an emperor would appoint people to the senate based on his qualifications. Certain elected officials also had automatic entry into the senate.

How were the senators and tribunes chosen in ancient Rome by?

The tribunes were chosen by a vote. The senators, well, that 's a different story as they could be chosen in a few ways. If a man were elected quaestor or tribune, he automatically had a seat in the senate. These were the only "elected" senators even though they were not directly chosen for the senate, but for other positions. A man could apply for entrance in the senate and if he met the qualifications of family and wealth he was in. A third way to be chosen for the senate was by direct appointment by a consul, dictator or emperor. Who could be a member of Rome's chief governing body?

If you mean, the senate, anyone who met the senatorial standards could be a member. The requirements were first of all to be a male and to have the financial requirement which was one million sesterces or more. The man also was supposed to be of good moral character. A man applied for admission to the senate through his friends who were senators. Of course, if a man had the emperor for a friend, there was no problem, emperors simply appointed men to the senate.
