Albert Jacka was the first Australian to be decorated with the Victoria Cross during the WWI. The Victoria Cross is the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces.
It currently isn't known who the first one hundred and eleven recipients were, however the first documented Victoria Cross winner was won by John wood. He was part of the 20th Bombay native infantry division and he fought in the Anglo-Persian wars. he was awarded the Victoria Cross on the 9th of August 1856 in Bushire Persia.
The Royal Warrant for the medal's creation was signed by Queen Victoria 29th January 1856. The medal design was approved in March 1856. The first medals were awarded 26th June 1857.

As a Lance-Corporal during the Gallipoli campaign (1915), Albert Jacka retook a trench from seven Turkish soldiers who had wounded or killed the Australian defenders. He was the first Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross during World War I. In August 1916, on the Western front, then-second lieutenant Jacka was involved in a similar hand-to-hand engagement against the Germans, for which he was awarded the Military Cross.
