The first non-Italian pope was St. Peter (32-57), who was an Israeli Jew, the last non-Italian Pope before John Paul II was Adrian VI (1522-23) who was Dutch and the only Pope in modern times, save Marcellus II (1555) to keep his baptismal name. John Paul II (1978-2005) was the first Polish Pope, and the first non-Italian pope since Adrian VI.
