The first airplane engine was designed and built by the makers of the first airplane: Wilbur and Orville Wright, with the help of a mechanic called Charlie Taylor. They had written to all the engine manufacturers they knew, but none had been able or willing to produce an engine to the specification required.
There were many other aircraft constructed over the course of history (see Wikipedia for details), but the Wright Brothers are credited by the Federation Aeronaugtique Internationale as making the first sustained and controlled heavier than air powered flight in December 1903.
