The first time Tanks were used in combat was 15th September, 1916, between Flers and Courcelette, during the Battle of the Somme. They were the British Mark I, the first Tank to be used in action, although the French had, independently, designed and built their own. They first used theirs in April, 1917. At Cambrai (November 20th, 1917) a far larger number of Tanks was used, but it was not the first occasion.
