One of a team of six that first reached the North Pole on April 6th, 1909. The team consisted of Robert E. Perry, Matthew Henson and 4 Inuit: Ootah, Ooqueah, Seeglo and Egigingwah. As the expedition was led by Perry, history considers him to have been first to reach the pole.
Robert Peary and Matthew Henson are credited with reaching the North Pole on the 6th April 1909. Note I said credited, as there is considerable doubt that they did, thanks to Peary's bad navigation keeping, and his claims of fantastic daily mileage.
