Actually, the above answer is incorrect. The reason that I have kept the answer is because it will serve for the next part of this answer. Mount Everest was first climbed by George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 1921, when it was first permitted by his Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama to explore Mount Everest. However, where it is often misinterpreted, the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest was in 1953 and they were Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. It is believed that Mallory, on his expedition to the summit in 1924, had made it to the summit, but seeing as he had never returned, it is not recorded as such.
The first PROVEN summit was by the aforementioned Hillary and Norgay in 1953. There is no proof that Mallory or anyone else summitted prior to that. I might just as well say my great-grand-uncle climbed it in 1895 but never told anybody.
Edmund Hillary, shortly followed by Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, they did so on the 29th May 1953 at 11.30 in the morning.
