Grace Murray Hopper was hired to be the third programmer for Howard Aiken's electromechanical programmable digital computer: the Harvard Mark I. She later programmed other computers at Harvard before being hired by Remington Rand to program their UNIVAC business computers.
All of the ENIAC programmers were women (Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Wescoff, Fran Bilas and Ruth Lichterman), because programming was considered "just a clerical task" and beneath the pride of the male mathematicians that worked out the mathematics to solve problems on ENIAC.
