Mexico as we recognize it today declared independence in 1821. Since then there have been several "Executive Classifications" that have governed the entity. For the first few years Mexico was considered a Regency status. And during those first few years it was not kings and queens that ruled the country, but rather military leaders (i.e. generals and such). Now a completely different topic is the colonization of the region that we now recognize as Mexico. And during the colonial era of that area there were royalty that ruled by charter.
