The first ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro was made by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889.
The first known successful climbers were Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller and their guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo. On October 6, 1889, Meyer and Purtscheller reached the highest point of Kibo, the tallest of three volcanic cones on Kilimanjaro. The first to the summit was Hans Meyer, followed by Purtscheller.

The second tallest cone, Mawenzi, was not climbed until July 29, 1912, by the German climbers Edward Oehler and Fritz Klute.
