Mother Teresa (then known as Sister Teresa) received a call from God whilst travelling on a train in India on September 10th, 1946 -- it was at this moment that she realized it was her special duty to care for the needy. Her first follower was a nun named Sister Agnes, who was a former student of hers at the Loretto convent in Darjeeling, India. As her followers increased, Mother Teresa received approval from the Pope to create a religious order of nuns, and on October 7th, 1950, the Missionaries of Charity was founded.
