Zheng He. He traveled the 7 seas by ship between 1403 and 1433 with the aid of a compass. Zheng He was not the first to travel by ship with a compass, he was only the first to record the use of a compass. The use of a compass on ships became popular during the time period of 850-1050 AD.
The first person recorded to have used the compass as a navigational aid was Zheng He (1371-1435), from the Yunnan province in China, who made seven ocean voyages between 1405 and 1433.
