Hendrik Verwoerd was the first South African president, however he was born in the Netherlands, so the next President: John Vorster, who was born in South Africa. Although he was white, he was born in South Africa, therefore he was 'African'.

Under the 1993 Constitution, the first president to be elected in South Africa was Nelson Mandela. He served from 1994 until 1999.
