the house of representatives
The first elected office Lincoln held was as a member of the Illinois General Assembly. Thereafter, he served a term as a member of US House of Representatives. He was later elected in 1860 as President of the US.
House of Representatives
Only two did: John Quincy Adams was elected to nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives beginning with the first House election after his presidency, and Andrew Johnson was elected to the U.S. Senate about 5½ years after leaving office. Although it was not an elected office, William Howard Taft served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1921 to 1930. He was appointed by Warren G. Harding, the first Republican President after Taft.
the white house
George Washington was elected and took the oath of office in 1789. Although President Washington was instrumental in picking the site of the new White House, he never lived there. The new Executive Mansion was completed in 1800 and the first resident of the White House was John Adams.
If the president is re-elected, he will move out of the White House in four more years. If he is not re-elected, he will leave the White House when his successor takes office in January 2013.
