The ancient Celts would bring in branches of pine into their homes for the winter solstice celebration. Whether they put a candle in the branches is not recorded. When the winter solstice celebration became the Christ Mass by the Catholic church in the middle ages the tradition of the pine branches became a symbol for Christ. The shape of the tree is a triangle and the points of the triangle stand for the Trinity. Just when candles were added is hard to tell, but the Germans by the 1800's had added candles to their trees. When they came to the New World colonies this tradition came with them. Today, the lights on the trees in Germany are still white representing the candles that were once placed on the trees.
