The Atom was not 'invented', it was discovered and technically no one has ever seen one, because they are too small to be seen by modern microscopes (even Electron Microscopes), but John Dalton is widely considered the father of modern Atomic theory, which established the foundations of the concept that matter was composed of atoms atoms. He developed the theory around 1800 and established that is was in accord with some of the basic rules of chemistry.
No person invented the atom. You can attribute the inventor to God or to evolution, but not to a person. There is a answer here that talks about who discovered the atom.

The first person to suggest such a thing was either Democritus or his mentor Leucippus. They used the word "atomos", were completely wrong about the nature of the thing, didn't really have a clue what they were talking about and would properly be called "natural philosophers" rather than scientists. (What's the difference? The approach of the natural philosophers was to make theories up based on how they thought the universe shouldwork. The scientific approach, on the other hand, is to collect data about how the universe actually does work, and then try to come up with a theory that fits.)

But that's where the name comes from.
