Many skeptics say acupuncture is pseudo-science, and any symptoms that are relieved are the result of what is called the "placebo effect" (if you believe something will help you, it often will, just because you believe it to be so). They also question certain Asian studies that have been released, most of which claim 100% success in alleviating pain; the skeptics, including some doctors, point out that no treatment, whether eastern or western, can guarantee such a high standard of relief, casting doubt on the reliability of the studies.
But whether there is scientific evidence or not, there are millions of people, both in Asia (where it is especially popular) and in the United States, who have tried it and insisted they received relief. And there are also a number of internet sources that insist that acupuncture can be very effective at relieving certain types of pain. The theory behind acupuncture is that it works by blocking points along nerve cells through which pain impulses would normally be sent. This prevents the pain signal from reaching the brain. But scientific studies of acupuncture are still inconclusive, with several studies showing no measurable effect, and others showing slight or even measurably positive effects.
