There are two answers to this question:
1.) Jesus Christ setup and established a church. He gave his gospel to Adam, the first man, and it has been passed down among his righteous people. After Christ died and was resurrected, the people eventually rejected all his apostles. The true and pure gospel of Christ was lost. Which brings us to. . .
2.) Joseph Smith was a young boy chosen by God and Jesus Christ to restore the gospel that was lost since the time of the original apostles. He restored the Church of Jesus Christ in these latter days.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the
"Mormon" church) believe that Jesus Christ is the founder of their
church. They believe that Jesus Christ restored His original New
Testament Church to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
