He originally had envisioned the Mississippi Valley for food and as a trade center to Hispaniola. His dreams were dashed as he lost 60,000 soldiers to yellow fever during the quashing of an Haitian uprising. He then sold the territory to the United States which, by the way, was the dream of President Thomas Jefferson in acquiring.
