There were a number of British generals in the Revolutionary War, including Braddock, Burgoyne (Recalled to England in disgrace), Clinton, and the great Cornwallis who sadly lost the battle of Concord, which pretty much ended the war for England. Thomas Gage did pretty well at the beginning of the war, but was replaced with William Howe - a huge mistake for the British army. Howe led his troops as if he was having a nice fox hunt or afternoon tea. Howe singlehandedly gave the colonial army hope and self confidence. Howe's greatest, overpowering mistake was in not finishing off colonial troops when he had them running. Instead, he would stop his army and set up camp for a few days or more, giving the colonial army time to regroup, rethink, and reprovision.
Paul revere had alerted the colonists that the British were coming in the war.
