The resources available made the difference in the newer invenstigation. At the time of the Jack the ripper murders, organised criminal investigation was in its infancy. The detectives in the Yorkshire Ripper case had the use of computers and all the apparatus of modern technology to help them althought there was some sloppy handling the information gathered. It was through the vigilance of an ordinary beat policeman, not a detective, that Sutcliffe was finally caught, when he checked the registration details of a suspcious-looking car and was challenged by Sutcliffe. This policeman was aware of the information gathered and was on the look out.
Hi. In 1888, the first police dog was used in England and I am just fascinated as to the first case to which a police dog was assigned. The London Metropolitan Police Force first used two bloodhounds to track suspects by their scent as part of the Jack the Ripper investigation. The Ripper was never caught, but the use of dogs as part of the Met continued.
Jack the ripper was the first serial killer to reach the media. The world has eyes on him. It was a scandal about the condition the police was at that time. There were no false starts in this case. There was nothing to go on but the remains of the victims. Even today it takes quite some time to catch a murderer on the run, but in the case of Jack the Ripper, there were many aspects police today would not come across.
Technically, there is no right to insist upon information about a police investigation while the case is open but before an arrest or charges are filed.
A private investigator is more likely to speed up an investigation than a police department when it comes to a case. The private investigator will hand over the information to the police department so that an arrest can be made in the case of a crime. An investigative officer will enforce the case.
A cold case is a police investigation that was previously unsolvable, not enough evidence or what ever at the time of the initial investigation. The case went "cold". Cold cases are investigated later in hopes of breaking the case. The TV shows about cold cases are shows about old unsolved police cases that still need to be solved.
In the case of a police investigation - it means that a final result has been attained and the case has been resolved insofar as the criminal investigation is concerned. In a couirt-related document - it means the case is closed usually, by an adjudication of the court.
Since we don't know the identity of JTR we may never know for sure. But it is a common practice for some serial killers to contact police in some way. Some offer help and/or suggestions to solve the case or some other ruse to insinuate themselves into the investigation. It is quite possible he enjoyed taunting police through letters to them or in the press.
That case was not closed.
We can't put a Modern Eye Toward an Old Investigation. The Police back them were not complete idiots. The problem with this case is that investigators weren't familiar with murders with no aparent reasons. Is not the same catching a murdering husband because of infidelity and so on. Back then, there was no fingerprinting, footprinting or DNA analisys. The only thing they had was the work of a beat policeman.
In 1888 the Metropolitan Police had a force of 15,000. However this did not include the police that covered the City of London. The City, as it is refered to, is the one square mile in the center of London. Similar to Washington, DC and the Vatican in Rome. The Metro police patroled the rest of the city outside of that square mile.
Are we speaking of a court case or a police investigation? Usually it means that the case is: over - finished - done - concluded, or in the case of a court action, the final ruling has been made.
