Some colonists had extreme national pride and believed that they were still British by nationality even though they were not born in Great Britain. These British loyalists believed in the British rule and were deeply Loyal to the King of England.
American colonists used boycotts to protest British rule and avoid the high taxes the King required. After Britain began taxing stamps and paper, colonists clashed with British tax collectors and authorities, eventually leading to the American Revolution.
The colnoists wrote the Declaration of Independence to tell England that they had suffered long enough, and were breaking away from the increasingly repressive British rule. The document told the king of England what troubles he had caused for them and how he had ignored the rights of the Americans.
Thomas Paine's pamphlet, Common Sense, argued that the British had no reason to rule the whole nation of America. Even if Britain claimed to be the 'mother country' of America, the actions Britain took were horrendous, almost moreso with this context, as no mother would harm her child so.
America was part of the British Empire for 174 years, between the early 1600s and 1781.

There were no presidents involved in the British Colonization of what became the US. Britain had a king and a parliament. The US was created only after the colonists successfully revolted from British rule.

Great Britain made many strict laws for the people to follow. The Americans had no one to represent them- meaning they had no way of changing these laws. They were very unhappy under British rule and decided they wanted their freedom.
Britain was, at the time, ruling America. Their king was the king of the American colonies, and Britain's Parliament made decisions about the colonies. Britain was what the Americans were rebelling against. The American colonists, tired of British rule, rose up and won the American Revolution, shaking off Britain's main hold of the new continent.
