The last executions in England happened on 13th August 1964.
Peter Anthony Allen and his accomplice, Gwynne Owen Evans were executed by hanging for the murder of John Alan West in April 1964.
The last execution in Scotland was on 15th August 1963.
Henry John Burnett was executed by hanging for the murder of Thomas Guyan.
The last execution in Northern Ireland was on 20th December 1961.
Robert McGladdery was executed by hanging for the murder of Pearl Gamble.
In Wales, the last execution was of Vivian Tweed on 6th May 1958 for murder.
The last woman to be executed in England was Ruth Ellis, who was hanged on 13th July 1955 for murder.
The last executions in Britain were of two men who were hanged on the same day, on 13th April 1964. They were Peter Anthony Allen and Welshman Gwynne Owen Evans, who were executed for the murder of laundry van driver John Alan West on 7th April that year.
Allen was hanged at Walton Prison in Liverpool, and Evans at Strangeways Prison in Manchester. The death penalty was never used again until it's final abolition in 1969, although it remained a legal option in Northern Ireland until 1973. An Irish Republican, William Holden, was sentenced to death that year for the murder of a British soldier during the Troubles, but was reprieved whilst he awaited his execution.
Theoretically, the death penalty remained for the crime of treason in the UK until 1998, when it was abolished under Tony Blair's government. However, in practice it would not have been carried out even if someone HAD been found guilty of treason- it's abolition was merely a formality, and before that, anyone found guilty of treason would in reality have been given an indefinite jail sentence.

Canada abolished capital punishment in 1976; the last execution was performed on December 11, 1962. Hanging was the only method they used.

Canada abolished the death penalty for everything but certain forms of treason and national defense issues in 1976. These last exceptions were removed in 1998, and Canada now has no 'capital' crimes.
Last person executed - 1964, Death penalty abolished for murder - 1969 (treason, espionage, arson against a royal dockyard and piracy with violence remain capital offences), Death penalty fully abolished - 1998.
Capital punishment should be used as a last resort in the USA, because on the one hand, there is sometimes a chance of making a mistake and executing the wrong person. On the other hand, a lot of times, it obvious who committed the horrible crime against their fellow human beings. Life imprisonment without parole is good enough 99% of the time. However, if a person who commits murder, is convicted and is sentenced to life without parole, and then commits another murder, then that person should get the death penalty, because life without parole did not stop their criminal activities.
Capital punishment delivers many murderers last jolt. I could really go for another jolt of coffee. This morning's news gave me quite a jolt.
It means executed by decapitation, having the head chopped off. It was the main method of capital punishment in France from the time of the French Revolution, and was last used there in 1977.
The death penalty does not apply to any offence within the Commonwealth of Australia and the Death Penalty Abolition Act 1973 which states: "A person is not liable to the punishment of death for any offence" is the legal justification for that. Capital punishment was last used in Australia in 1967, when Ronald Ryan was hanged in Victoria, he was the last of 114 people executed in the 20th century and previous to his execution Queensland and New South Wales had already abolished the death penalty for murder. It was removed as a punishment for murder in all states by 1984 when the state of Western Australia abolished the death penalty for all crimes, and the next year NSW removed death as a possible punishment for treason, piracy and arson of naval dockyards. Between Ryan's execution and 1980, occasional death sentences were passed in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, but they were commuted to life imprisonment.
