He put himself at the disposal of his State, Virginia. He was appointed general of State's Militia and entrusted to organize the defense of the Old Dominion. when Virginia entered the Confederacy, he was sent to the front of West Virginia, where due to the lack of sufficient troops he couldn't prevent the region from being conquered by the Union forces led by General McClellan. Then, after the Unionist's size of Port-Royal, he was appointed as commander of the defenses in the southern South Carolina and Georgia. After the stabilization of the military situation there, he was ordered to Richmond to be appointed as military adviser of Jefferson Davis. After the serious injury of Gen. Joseph Johnston at the Battle of Seven Pines, he was appointed as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and of the Sectors of Virginia and North Carolina.
