It has been written that President Lincoln had, prior to Fort Sumter, offered Robert E. Lee a major post in the US Military. Clearly he had a high opinion of Lee's abilities. It can be said however, that Lincoln greatly admired the ability of Lee to effectively carrying on the war with substantially less men and supplies then anyone could have imagined. Clearly if Lee had the resources of the Union, whichever side he fought for would be the winner. Lincoln had "favorites" during the course of the war. When these generals "failed" however, he owed his reelection and victory in the war to General US Grant.Lee could have provided Lincoln or Davis with that victory if he was exchanged with Grant at any time in the war. Grant had one outstanding advantage. He was named "general in chief" after the South had lost much of its ability to wage a complete war, and had a navy.
It is well documented that Lincoln was in awe of Robert E. Lee.
