While Luther did have some legitimate complaints which the pope refused to address, he was also teaching a number of things that were considered heretical by the Church. When he refused to recant these teachings, the pope excommunicated him.

Roman Catholic AnswerMartin Luther was a religious who had voluntarily taken vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty before God Almighty, and, without any permission, had broken all of his solemn vows. Furthermore, supposedly, he was ordained a priest, and was further bound by those vows. All of which he forsook and proceeded to live a dissolute life. Further he publicly questioned infallible teachings of the Church, and in denying said teachings, was denying Christ, and leading people astray into grave error and risking their eternal damnation. The Holy Father tries to correct all of this with his Bull, Decet Romanum Pontificem, a copy of which is attached at the link below.

How did Pope Leo X punish Martin Luther?

Like a good Father, Pope Leo X attempted to reason with Martin Luther, and even offered him safe conduct to Rome so that they could meet personally, and discuss Luther's "issues". All attempts at reconciliation and even friendly gestures from Luther's superiors, of which the pope was the highest on earth, were, not just rebuffed, but actually belittled by M. Luther, which is just beyond comprehension. At the links below you will find two Papal Bulls by Pope Leo X, the first, Exsurge Domine is the Bull he issued condemning the errors of Martin Luther on 15 June 1520; the second, Decet Romanum Pontificem is the Bull of Excommunication of Martin Luther and all his followers issued on 3 January 1521.

Who were Michelangelo's two great patrons?

The Medici Family and Pope Julius II and Pope Leo of the Roman Catholic Church.

Where did Luther go after he was excommunicated?

In January 1521, the Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther. He was then summoned to appear at the Diet of Worms, an assembly of the Holy Roman Empire. He refused to recant and Emperor Charles V declared him an outlaw and a heretic. Luther went into hiding at Wartburg Castle. In 1522, he returned to Wittenberg and in 1525 married Katharina von Bora, a former nun, with whom he had six children.

Who are the people Michelangelo worked for?

Julius II, Leo X, Clement VII and Paul III.

What issues did Martin Luther have with the Catholic church?

Luther's refusal to retract his writings in confrontation with the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by Pope Leo X and declaration as an outlaw. His translation of the Bible into the language of the people made the Scriptures more accessible, causing a tremendous impact on the church and on German culture. It fostered the development of a standard version of the German language, added several principles to the art of translation, and influenced the translation of the King James Bible. His hymns inspired the development of congregational singing within Christianity. His marriage to Katharina von Bora set a model for the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism. Historical debate has concentrated on Luther's writings about the Jews.
