The names of the leaders of the invasion of Britain are unclear and in most cases unknown. What we do know is that Julius Caesar led the first invasion back in 55 BC and Claudius "invaded" Britain and annexed it to the empire in 43 AD. Between those almost one hundred years there was a Roman presence in Britain. Treaties were made with local tribes and traders formed colonies. The future emperor Vespasian and his legions pacified a large area before Claudius' arrival. The so-called invasion of Britain by Claudius was in reality a publicity stunt carried out in order to hype up Claudius' popularity back home.
