The French scultor Fréderic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) was the main designer of the Statue of Liberty. Gustave Eiffel, the father of the Eiffel Tower designed the internal structural supports.
The original name of his master piece is "La Liberté éclairant le Monde" (Liberty Enlightening the World).
This statue, made in France, was given by France to US for its Centennial of 1876.
The artist also made small replicas of the statue for his own country, that can be seen at the Jardins du Luxembourg, by example.
According to some sources, the model for the statue was his own mother, other sources think that a black slave was the model.

∙ 14y agoThe creator was Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi 1834 - 1883. He died shortly before the statue was shipped to the US from France, never seeing the full majesty of his creation in it's perfect setting.
