Yes, they did have children, but his death was by no means the cause of her suicide. The cause of Cleopatra's suicide was her pride. She offed herself to avoid being humiliated in Octavian's triumph in Rome.

However, he was a disliked Pharaoh and many Alexandrians were plotting to kill him. Cleopatra was his favorite daughter and Ptolemy XII would probably give Cleopatra the throne. Everyone hated Cleopatra too, because her father was not a great leader. Cleopatra became Pharaoh when she was 18 years old.
