Nelson A. Rockefeller was appointed U. S. Vice President by Gerald Ford in 1974 after Vice President Ford became President, and he served until Walter Mondale took office in 1977.
1976 was the most recent of the nine times since ratification of the 12th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution that the incumbent president ran for reelection, but the incumbent vice president (when there was one) was not his running mate, and it is the only such instance since the major-party presidential candidates started choosing their own running mates. President Ford's running mate in 1976 was Bob Dole. That was also one of only three times in which both of the major-party vice presidential nominees were later presidential nominees, the other two being 1920 and 1980.
Nelson Rockefeller was the Vice President of the United States until 1977. After him, Walter Mondale became Vice President under President Jimmy Carter.
