The Battle of Bunker Hill, also known as Breeds Hill, started on June 17, 1775. The Patriots had started to fortify Bunker Hill, an American post overlooking Boston, in preparation of a skirmish with the British General Gage and his troops. Finally, Gage received his orders to take down the Patriot outpost but decided to do it through a frontal assault. American marksmen, delighted with their luck, licked the British troops as they staggered up the fort. Gage, naively insisted on repeating the frontal assault twice more until the fort was overrun by the British due to a shortage of ammunition on the Patriots' side. Even though the Battle of Bunker Hill is officially counted as a victory in favor of the British, it was a huge morale-booster for the American revolutionaries who had managed to mow down a good thousand of the troops down before running out of ammo and booking it. General Gage was promptly recalled for his rash decisions.
