The Axis(Germany+Italy+Japan+Puppet states) were winning for a long time, they controled most of the Europe and would maintain to do so if Hitler didn't make some mistakes when invading his ex-ally Russia. He got pushed back and if it isn't enough, USA got involved after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which means that "Allies" got 2 new members(Russia and USA). With US equipment and troops in Europe, UK/France/Poland and others could finally push forward towards Germany. This is where the tides turned against the Axis. Until that point, Axis were successful in their plan.
