Few women went to the diggings to dig - some went to be entertainment for the men, as this vocation also paid extremely well. There were a great many Chinese immigrants, hard-working people, who also came to the goldfields and were resented for their luck and strong work ethic in persisting until they found substantial parable gold.
People went flocking to the gold fields to seek their fortune. They got "Gold Fever" which meant that you were addicted to digging for gold.
