Joseph Smith, Jr. is considered the first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church). Church members believe that he organized the Church under the direction of Jesus Christ. After he was shot and killed in 1844, Brigham Young lead Church members to religious freedom in Utah and became the second prophet of the Church.

For this reason, he is often called "The American Moses". In the west, he organized hundreds of cities and towns and established industry and trade.
