The Surinen are thought to be the first people of Suriname. They were part of a larger group called the Taínos, who were a seafaring people. The seafarers originally were from South America, but many of their numbers quickly spread permanently into such select parts of the Caribbean as Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the northernmost of the Lesser Antilles. They were Arawak language speakers. Arawak was one of the main spoken languages of pre Columbian South America.
