There is only one Secretary of Defense in office at any given time. They are appointed by each president upon their election. There have been 24 Secretaries of Defense. The current Secretary of Defense under Barack Obama is Chuck Hagel. Hagel has been in his position since February 27, 2013. President Obama had two previous Secretaries of Defense. His first was Robert Gates, who was appointed by George W. Bush during his presidency. Barack Obama then appointed Leon Panetta, who served for about 18 months before the appointment of Chuck Hagel.
