They became traders because they needed more supplies and foods for the growing population because richer Romans were buying smaller farms to make them into latifundias to become even more richer so the farmers didn't have enough food to feed the growing population. They became road builders to make transportation easier for the military to get around. It also made it easier to travel for merchants. If you think I am wrong, fine but I am learning about this exact thing in History so it is fresher in my mind and I have an A+
