It depends on what you term as successful, but I would say the Mormons, since they went into a more hostile environment and made a huge city that is still major today.
Both Mormons and homesteaders faced the problem of living far from 'civilized' society. Getting supplies from the east was difficult, so most were forced to live entirely off the land.
The most successful were the people who didn't die and were able to create a life on the Great Plains.
Most Mormons would answer that it is because God is on their side.
Radical Mormons are people who are Mormons or share similar beliefs with Mormons, but don't fit in with the mainstream Mormon culture. They are either more liberal or more conservative than most Mormons.
The Mormons played quite a lage role in the gold rush. Their settlements in Utah served as a rest stop and trading post for those heading to California. Some historians have said that without the Mormons, the gold rush could not have been successful, and without the gold rush, the Mormons could not have been successful. The Mormons needed money and supplies from the east, and those heading to California needed food, supplies, and advice about living and traveling in the west. It was a welcome trade for both parties.
They established irrigation systems that brought water from the mountains to their fields in the valleys.
Which Mormons during which time period? If you are referring to the Mormon pioneers, their goal was simply to survive, develop the land, and pass the gospel on to their children. They were extremely successful at this, as the cities they founded are thriving today and the Mormon population has continually increased since then.
Homesteaders often had to struggle even for the necessities.
There are more Mormons in North America than Muslims. In fact chances are if you're reading this there is 2 Mormons, and one Muslim also on this same subject in the U.S.
