In 1972 Richard Nixon was elected President with his running mate Spiro T. Agnew. Their Democratic opponents were George McGovern for President and Sargent Shriver for VP.

(Thomas Eagleton was originally nominated for VP but was found to have had a nervous break down and was dropped from the ticket.) John Schmitz and Thomas Anderson ran on the American Independent ticket and won 1.42% of the popular vote.
