Somehow, despite their vows of poverty they became a wealthy and powerful order. Rumors abounded as to what secrets and wealth they held. In 1307 Pope Clement V ordered their arrest for heresey and the King of France complied, the required acts of torture obtained confessions and the Order was banned. On 19 March 1314 their leader Jaques de Molay was burned at the stake. Legends and rumors persist to this day about what wealth and secrets the Templars concealed and where it is hidden. In the Crusades, the Knights Templar were a group of warrior monks who were charged with protecting the Holy Mound and the Temple of Solomon (wherefore they got their name). Soon, however, since they were considered "The Poor Knights of Christ" (i.e. social status was not needed to join and become a knight among them), their numbers and influence grew, until the King of France decided to cut them off. There are many legends about the Templars, however, none of them has been historically proven.
