  • They were a small group and the first of Christian military knights. They served in the first crusade and when they were housed at the Temple Mount in 1118 they numbered only nine. Somehow, despite their vows of poverty they became a wealthy and powerful order. Rumors abounded as to what secrets and wealth they held. In 1307 Pope Clement V ordered their arrest for heresey and the King of France complied, the required acts of torture obtained confessions and the Order was banned. On 19 March 1314 their leader Jaques de Molay was burned at the stake. Legends and rumors persist to this day about what wealth and secrets the Templars concealed and where it is hidden. • The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici), popularly known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple, or the Crusaders, were among the most famous of the Christian military orders. The organization existed for about two centuries in the Middle Ages, created in the aftermath of the First Crusade of 1096 to ensure the safety of the large numbers of European pilgrims who flowed toward Jerusalem after its conquest. The Knights Templar was a christian military organization from the Middle Ages. The order was actually originally endorsed by the Catholic church and had it's full support. The knights templar grew rapidly in power and membership. The group was very influential during the Crusades. After the crusades the knights templar quickly lost support and power.
