Overseas colonies were established by the Phoenicians in order to expand their basic economic specialty, which was gaining wealth and power by trading with other nations. One of its colonies became a world power in the name of Carthage.
Possibly the Phoenicians.
The ancient mercantile civilization of Phoenicia helped to spread civilization in ancient times primarily through its daring, far-ranging seafaring voyages. Motivated by trading interests above all, yet perhaps also spurred on by the desire to explore for its own sake, Phoenician traders were for many generations the "go-betweens" of older civilizations in the east and newer, rougher societies elsewhere in the Mediterranean and beyond. They carried trade goods, yet at the same time they carried technologies, ideas, and values from one point to another.

They traded throughout the Mediterranean area, and established an alphabet which came to form the basis of the Greek and Roman alphabets, and so our alphabets of today.
They invented a system of alphabetic writing. They were also traders who operated around the Mediterranean sea and so spread the writing and the ideas it contained. However the Mediterranean Sea is hardly the world, and so most of 'the world' had never heard of or from the Phoenicians.
We are often told that the Phoenicians invented the alphabet. Regardless of who put pen to papyrus to create it, the Phoenician contribution was none-the-less major and critical. They were the major sea-traders of the Mediterranean, and they went everywhere. When the Phoenicians began using the alphabet as a simple and easy way to keep track of their trades, it was exposed to everyone.
