The Regulators were a posse deputized by Lincoln town constable, Dick Brewer, in opposition to Lincoln County Sheriff William Brady's posse. Brady supported the Murphy-Dolan interests in the county. They had a monopoly on the dry goods business and government beef contracts which they filled by buying stolen cattle. Newcomers, Turnstall and McSween opened a competing general store. When a kangaroo court ordered the confiscation of their assets, Turnstall was shot in cold blood by the sheriff's posse. The constable deputized Turnstall's ranch hands and friends to bring in the murderers. Although they were on the side of freedom and justice, the Regulators were labeled as outlaws but few survived to face trial.
John Tunstall was shot by Jesse Evans, William Morton, and Tom Hill. The Regulators were formed by his friends and supporters to avenge his death, leading to the Lincoln County War.
