Moses is credited with being the person who gave Genesis the form we have had passed down to us. However it also appears likely that he got his material from earlier sources. Writing was known to exist well before the time of Abraham, and so it is possible he is one of Moses' sources.

A:Tradition says that the Book of Genesis had only one author, Moses, who therefore was the author of chapter 1. However, biblical scholars believe that the Book of Genesis had three main authors, all anonymous and now known as the Yahwist ('J Source'), Elohist ('E Source') and the Priestly Source ('P Source').

The author of Genesis chapter 1 was the Priestly Source, writing towards the end of the Babylonian Exile, or shortly afterwards.

Another Answer:

The Bible repeatedly tells all who read it that all Scripture is the LORDS and has been given to certain people to record for every human who reads it. So the author of all chapters/verses is the LORD.

More commonly though, we seek to know which human recorded certain Scriptures as your question is asking. In many places in both Testaments, the first five books of the Bible, of which Genesis is the first, are attributed to Moses. Obviously, he was not present at the Genesis events so it is more of his compiling the already written 'tablets' or was given the words to write by God Himself.

Jesus refers to Moses as the writer calling it the 'Book of Moses.'

Mark 12:26New International Version (NIV)

26 Now about the dead rising-have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?

A:The authors of the Book of Genesis were anonymous, but have been given names by modern scholars to aid in discussion. They are:
  1. The J Source, or Yahwist. This source wrote early in the first millennium BCE in the southern Hebrew kingdom of Judah.
  2. The E Source, or Elohist. This source wrote a little later than the Yahwist, from the northern Hebrew kingdom of Israel.
  3. The Priestly Source. This source wrote during or shortly after the Babylonian Exile.

Traditionally, Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (the third person of the Triune God).

However modern scholars have carefully analysed the text and say that the real author of Genesis chapter 3 was an anonymous source now known as the Yahwist (or 'J Source'), who lived in Judah around 900 BCE.
