This was a disparaging term applied to US soldiers because of incidents of both accidental and deliberate killings of children and infants (by both sides) during the Vietnam War. The term was used by the most vociferous opponents of the war, and was an undeserved epithet for the majority of the US Military who served in a difficult conflict, often with ambiguous directions from their superiors.
The village of My Lai was exterminated.

spit on troops coming home and call them baby killers
Yes. many protestors were unfair to the reurning veterans, many of whom where drafted and didn't really want to be there.additional detailsYes they did. To really answer the question, lets look at who said that. Although millions of people across the USA were against the war, not all of them took part in the demonstrations and even those that did, not all of those people resorted to violence and name calling. But, some more radical protestors did resort to calling returning veterans names, including baby killers. They did that because they perceived the veterans as wantonly killing innocent civilians, including babies. In actuality, most combat veterans took exceptional care when fighting around civilians not to injure or kill them. This caution sometimes led to injuries and death to themselves. However, the media and the photographers that witnessed the death and destruction of civilians and wrote about it, inflamed the anti war groups back in the US. Rightly or wrongly, they made the deaths of civilians more numerous than they actually were. And of course, the real cases of American war atrocities like the MyLai Massacre, only helped to insure that more and more people back in the states believed that all veterans were baby killers.
Television news showed GIs using their cigarette lighters, the Zippo, burning down people's homes in small towns (villages). Then in '68 came the My Lai massacre...
Treatment of Returning VeteransWW2 veterans were respected by the public, Vietnam veterans and were looked down upon by the public, mostly because the media was where it shouldn't have been. Untill several years latter of course, now the veterans of Vietnam are respected as well WW2 Veterans were greated with parades. Vietnam Veterans as well as Vietnam Era Veterans were spat at and called 'baby killers'.

Soldiers were NOT welcomed home with happiness. Soldiers that came home from the Vietnam War were called baby killers and were often spat on.
They were booed at disliked. They were called "Baby killers" and much worse. They were like that because of the media being able to record and show American citizens the horrors of the Vietnam war.
spit on troops coming home and call them baby killers
they were called baby killers because they would kill vietnamese children because they would try to kill them and themselves with grenades.
The Vietnam war was not a 'popular war', especially on college campasses. Therefore when the soldiers came home, they were met at the airport by mob-protestors of the war..............and called baby killers. World War 2 soldiers returned home as heros, even tho they had undoubtedly committed atrocities themselves...............it happens in war. But in that era the whole country was behind the war.
